Act 150, a new law related to Vermont's public libraries, takes effect July 1, 2024. A notable part of Act 150 lowers the age of confidentiality protections for library accounts from 16 to 12. At the Chelsea Public Library we're updating our records to follow the new law. We will talk to patrons 12 and up about their new rights and their responsibility for the library materials they check out.
We will update contact information on file to ensure that we share information only with the people, if any, that teens and tweens want to access their accounts.
12 to 17 year old library patrons - please stop by the library so we can update these confidentiality preferences.
Adults - if you have a 12 to 17 year old library user in your life, please encourage them to stop by the library to update their accounts.
Public libraries are here to protect your privacy. Librarians are not only upholding an ethical tenet of our profession but in this case, also the Vermont statute.
